Keep Cherry County B-E-A-utiful!!

We are surrounded by beauty in Cherry County.  We are lucky to be minutes away from a host of scenic pleasures.  Whether it is a National Park, State Park, or Private or public lands please, please, please respect it.  The individuals that care for these beautiful places shouldn’t have to clean up after us or have to spend time worrying if there will be trespassing or vandalism. “Leave no Trace” is an initiative the adopted by the Center for Outdoor Ethics that I thought was fitting here with hopes to minimize the adverse impacts seen at parks including:

· User-created (undesignated) trails which lead to erosion, wildlife and vegetation disturbance
· Increasing amounts of trash found on the trails
· Wildlife being approached or fed
· Wildflowers being picked or trampled
· Unprepared hikers
· Disregard for park rules

1. Know Before You Go
2. Stick To Trails
3. Trash Your Trash
4. Leave It As You Find It
5. Be Careful With Fire
6. Keep Wildlife Wild
7. Share Your Trails

We need to take care of these treasures so that they are open and safe for future generations to enjoy.

Keep Cherry County B-E-A-utiful!  Now go outside!

Valentine & Cherry County…..Honestly, I feel it “IS” for everyone!

Often times, I feel that I personally do not go on vacation or venture out of the county, because I already have it all ….. right here!  We dub Valentine as the “Heart City”, with good reason.  However; Valentine may be the heart of Cherry County, but remember, all of the strong communities that surround us ~ Cody, Nenzel, Sparks, Brownlee, Merriman, Kilgore, Crookston, and Woodlake. These small towns offer so much to the dynamic that makes up Cherry County as a whole, and we are lucky to have their strong support.

When I say “I think Valentine & Cherry County ‘IS’ for everyone”, here is what I mean:  When you look around our landscape, we have peace and quiet of the sand hills, hiking trails, waterfalls, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, water sports, swimming, camping, shooting ranges, bird watching, and star gazing.

We have golf courses of all shapes and sizes that are ranked right up there with the best of the best!  We have wineries, vinegar, breweries, shopping, restaurants, museums, libraries, festivals, fair & rodeos, and other community events.  There isn’t even a bad hairdresser in this county!

We are surrounded by quality lodging facilities that include hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, Air B&Bs, cabins, RV hook-ups, and primitive camping. State of the art Hospital, clinics and emergency facilities, along with doctors, nurses, EMT staff and local Volunteer Fire Departments make up a strong emergency support group for our county.

Our support doesn’t end there. We are lucky to have Nebraska Game & Parks, National Park Service, Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, City Councils, Ag Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Arts council, Cherry County Tourism Board, and so many more great organizations that volunteer their time to make our community great!  Thank you….. Honestly, it is for everyone!

Time to Start Thinking Summer!

It’s that time of year.  Kids will be out of school soon and the summer events begin.  We have two new events this year to go along with all the others.  Saturday, May 26th will be the inaugural Niobrara River Festival.  There will be canoe and kayak races, food, beer and music.  It starts at 9:00 a.m. and goes to 10:00 p.m.  Lots of festivities!  Search Niobrara River Festival on Facebook for more details.

The other new event is the Chaduza Cook Off, which is Saturday, June 23rd.  It will be an all day event with the categories of burger, chicken, and ribs.  There will also be a beer garden provided by Bolo Beer, our local brewery. We are set for a busy summer, just check our calendar of events!  So, start planning your trip to the Heart City!  Valentine, Nebraska.  Small Town…..Big Adventure.

Spring is Here… I Think

It appears that spring is actually here.  Things are warming up and it’s time to start heading out into the great outdoors!  We’re starting to see a few people paddling the Niobrara River and that will increase greatly in the upcoming weeks.

I talked to one of our most skilled fisherman yesterday and he assured me that the walleye would start biting now.  According the Nebraska Game & Parks fishing forecast Merritt Reservoir should be, by far, the best walleye lake in the state.  I also saw really nice crappies come out through the ice this year.

Golfing has already started at Frederick Peak Golf Club and The Prairie Club is gearing up to start later this month.  We now have four golf courses in the area, all designed by pros!  So, start planning your vacation to Nebraska’s playground, Valentine Nebraska, Small Town, Big Adventure.

Ice Fishing

What is there to do for fun in the winter in Valentine?  Well, ice fishing of course.  We have almost a foot of ice on our lakes here and I’ve seen some nice messes of fish.  Lots of nice bluegill, perch, bass and northern pike.  They are going to renovate Pelican this year, so they have removed size limits on the pike and bass.  Possession remains in place, but now you can keep those big northerns

We also have the Cork Thornton Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament coming up.  The rules meeting will be at the Peppermill on Friday, January 26th at 6:00 p.m. and the tournament will be at Merritt Reservoir on Saturday, January 27th.  You can print out an entry form on this site, just click on it in the calendar of events.  Come on up to Valentine and get in on some great fishing!

Niobrara River & Frederick Peak Golf Club

The summer months are upon and the Niobrara River is running beautifully.  It’s time to call one of our outfitters you can find on this website and book your summer trip.  Whether you want to canoe, kayak, tube or tank the river, they will all give you an unforgettable vacation.

For those of you who enjoy golf, Valentine is the place to be.  The Prairie Club has two world class courses, The Dune and The Pines.  The  Horse course is out there also and is a fun 10 hole par 3.  The catch is that there are no tee boxes, it is played similar to the basketball game.  The first player chooses where he wants to shoot from and to what hole and the second must match.

We are very excited to announce that our new city course is open!  Frederick Peak Golf Club is a beautiful 10 hole course that was designed by Tom Lehman, who by the way, was the designer of The Dunes.  Camping, fishing, hiking, biking and more.  It’s all here in Valentine, Nebraska….Small Town, Big Adventure.

The Time is Now!

The warmer weather has opened up so many opportunities for fun in the Valentine area.  I just golfed the new course here in Valentine and I’m telling you Frederick Peak Golf Club is special.  This course has it all.  It is simply beautiful to start with, and the layout of the course is so unique.  If you are a golfer of any level, you can’t miss out on this gem.

Don’t forget about our other golf courses at The Prairie Club, they are world class.  Two 18 hole courses and fun 10 hole course.  Valentine is becoming a golf Mecca!  I have also seen kayaks and canoes going back and forth to the scenic Niobrara River and the river is running beautifully.

Fishing is picking up at Merritt Reservoir and the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge as well.  It’s time to come out and enjoy Nebraska’s favorite playground!  Valentine, Nebraska…..Small Town, Big Adventure.

Fall Fun in Valentine

The fun does not stop with summer in the Heart City!  Come on out for our annual Old West Days & Cowboy Poetry Gathering October 6th through the 9th.  The event starts with an old time Melodrama then there’s the cowboy poetry and music Friday and Saturday.  Friday, the Western Art Trade & Quilt show opens.  It all winds up Sunday with a trail ride and an encore of the old time melodrama.

The annual Chamber Golf Tournament is coming up also.  There’s still time to enter a team in this four person scramble!  It is Wednesday, October 12th with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start.  The bonus is that it is once again being held at the world famous Prairie Club!

For you hunters out there, we have ample opportunities for great fall hunting with over 200,000 acres of public hunting land!  The fun never ends in Valentine, Nebraska……Small Town, Big Adventure.

Summer’s Not Over Yet!

I really enjoyed my trip down the scenic Niobrara River last Sunday. If you want to feel like your all by yourself on the river, an afternoon trip this time of year is the way to go!  We put on at Cornell Bridge and kayaked to Brewer Bridge at around 12:30 p.m. and only encountered a few groups on our way.  It was beautiful!  So, if you love the river and want to avoid the crowds, now’s the time to come.  I also just visited with a couple that had spent the last few days at The Prairie Club.  Both courses are in great shape according to them, and the service and food are outstanding.  Ahh, Valentine, Nebraska….Small Town. Big Adventure

Cherry County Fair and Rodeo

This is the week of the Cherry County Fair & Rodeo.  There’s all kinds of family fun to be had at the fair!  There’s a parade Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. down Main St.  Everybody loves a parade. There’s a horseshoe tournament, a commercial trade show, a pancake feed, the Chamber Watermelon Feed, live music Friday and Saturday, the rodeo on both Friday and Saturday night, a carnival and much much more.  So, plan to visit Valentine this week.  Take in the beautiful Niobrara River, then spend some time enjoying our county fair!!!
